5 Minute Workshops
How to Make Your About Page Answer “Why You?”
Most real estate About pages explain who the agent is. They list years of experience, awards, areas served, and reasons the agent loves real estate.
Those details can help. But they often leave the prospect’s biggest question unanswered: “Why should I choose you?”
In this workshop, you’ll turn the opening of your About page into a clearer answer. You won’t need to rewrite the whole page. You’ll start by placing one Compelling Reason where prospects are most likely to see it.
01By The End Of This Workshop
You’ll draft a short About page opening that leads with a Compelling Reason, explains the benefit to the prospect, and supports it with a believable fact.
02What You'll Learn
- Why an About page should help prospects make a decision
- How to move the focus from your history to the prospect’s benefit
- How to use your experience as proof instead of making it the whole message
03The Problem
A prospect doesn’t visit your About page because they want to read your life story. They’re trying to decide if you understand their needs and can help them get a good result.
A page filled with “I,” “me,” and “my” can make the agent the center of the message. The prospect has to work out what all those facts mean for them.
For example, “I have 18 years of experience” tells the prospect something about you. It doesn’t explain how that experience will make their sale, purchase, or move better.
Your background still matters. It simply becomes more useful after you connect it to a prospect benefit.
04The Simple Lesson
Lead with the benefit. Then use your background to make that benefit believable.
Your About page opening should answer three simple questions:
- Who do you help?
- What useful benefit do they receive?
- What makes that benefit believable?
The answer can become one of your 12 Compelling Reasons To Do Business With You.
Instead of opening with your job title or career history, open with what clients gain from working with you. Then support that message with relevant experience, a service process, a repeated point from client reviews, or another credible fact.
Your story still has a place on the page. It becomes proof for the Compelling Reason instead of asking the prospect to find the benefit on their own.
05Real Estate Example
Imagine an agent whose reviews often mention clear communication. The current About page starts like this:
“I’ve been a licensed real estate agent for 15 years and have helped clients throughout the area.”
That fact is useful, but the benefit is hidden. A prospect-focused opening might say:
“I help busy sellers understand what’s happening, what comes next, and what needs their attention. My 15 years of experience and clear update process help clients move through each step with fewer unanswered questions.”
Now the experience supports a clear benefit. A seller can understand why the agent’s experience matters to them.
06What This Means For Your Marketing
Your About page can do more than introduce you. It can help prospects understand and remember a Compelling Reason for choosing you.
Once that message is clear, you can use it in other places. It might appear on your homepage, in a consultation, in an email, or in a social post.
It can also become part of a recognition campaign. One Virtually Branded Scene can pair your website with that Compelling Reason. Spaced Repetition can then help more prospects see and remember the message over time.
The goal is consistency. Prospects should find the same useful benefit whether they see your marketing or visit your About page.
075-Minute Action Step
Read the first 150 words of your About page. Find one fact about yourself that could support a prospect benefit.
Then draft a new three-sentence opening:
- Name the type of client you help.
- State one Compelling Reason that explains the benefit they receive.
- Add one fact that makes the message believable.
Use this starting point if you need it:
“I help [type of client] [receive a useful benefit]. My [experience, process, skill, or proof] helps them [understand the practical result].”
Five minutes is the goal, not a cutoff. Take a little extra time if more research or thought will improve your result.
08Your Result
You now have the start of an About page that helps a prospect understand why working with you could benefit them. Your background supports the message without taking attention away from the prospect.
09Put It To Work
A clear About page opening gives you one useful message to repeat across your marketing. The next step is to build the rest of your 12 Compelling Reasons To Do Business With You and give each one enough visibility to be remembered.
Virtually Branded Scenes can pair those messages with your own website and show real people paying attention to it. Used over 12 weeks, the scenes create Visual Social Proof while helping your website and Compelling Reasons become more familiar.
